Are tannins bad?
No, and many fish prefer the conditions. They tint the water like weak tea and have mild antibacterial properties. If you dislike the look, activated carbon removes them, and repeated water changes reduce them over time.
How do I stop driftwood floating?
Soak it, sometimes for weeks, or weigh it down or attach it to slate until it waterlogs. Boiling speeds it up and also removes some tannins.
Which rocks are safe?
Inert stones such as most granite, slate and quartz are safe. Limestone and many pale stones raise hardness. A drop of vinegar on the rock is the quick test: fizzing means carbonate.
