Quarantine Tank vs Treating the Main Tank
Using a quarantine tank vs medicating the display tank: disease spread, filter bacteria, invertebrates, cost and why quarantine is the cheaper option.
The short version
A quarantine tank isolates new or sick fish so disease never reaches the display, and it lets you medicate without exposing plants, invertebrates and your biological filter to drugs. Treating the main tank risks all of those. Set up a quarantine tank, because a bare ten gallon with a sponge filter costs less than replacing one stocked display tank.

Choose the Tetra LED 10 Gallon Complete Kit if…
You add fish more than once. Most disease outbreaks arrive with new stock, and a two to four week observation period catches almost all of them. Keep a spare sponge filter running in the display so the quarantine tank is instantly cycled when needed.

Choose the Mesh Breeder Net, 2 Pack if…
A breeder net separates fry or a bullied fish within the same water. It is not quarantine, since disease and medication pass straight through the mesh, and it should not be used as one.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long should quarantine last?
Commonly two to four weeks, long enough for most problems to show. Observation alone catches a great deal; medicating prophylactically is debated and depends on the disease risk you are managing.
Will medication harm my filter?
Many antibacterials do, because the biological filter is bacteria. That is a central reason to medicate in a separate tank with a sponge filter you can afford to re-cycle.
Do I need to run it constantly?
No. Keep the tank and equipment stored, and run a spare sponge filter in the display so it is colonised and ready. That way the quarantine tank is cycled the day you need it.
