How long should I run the lights?
Six to eight hours is a sensible starting point. Longer photoperiods are the most common cause of algae in new tanks, and plants do not benefit from light beyond what their nutrient and carbon supply can support.
More light means more growth, surely?
Only if carbon and nutrients keep up. Light drives demand; if CO2 and fertiliser cannot meet that demand, the surplus feeds algae instead of plants. Balance matters more than raw intensity.
Will a planted light hurt my fish?
No, but a sudden bright light in a dark room startles them. That is exactly what ramping solves, and it is why sunrise and sunset simulation is more than a gimmick.
